Artists Of The Week
Each week on Instagram, we are highlighting artists of the global majority from the past and present. We hope teachers will find ways to incorporate their work and stories into their curriculum. Remember, representation matters! Engaging children with artists who look like them, have similar experiences, and come from similar backgrounds is an excellent source of inspiration and empowerment. Reflecting on their own identities and experiences (mirrors) and also providing insight into the identities and experiences of others (windows) can move students toward a more holistic understanding of the world around them (sliding glass doors). We recommend teachers read "Mirrors, Windows, and Sliding Glass Doors" By Rudine Sims Bishop for more information.
We also want to remind educators that representing diverse artists in your curriculum is only part of an Anti-Bias, Anti-Racist curriculum. Artists have many layered identities, and art educators need to present them as such.
